The Wrath of the Lich King: What’s New?

If you are a gamer, then you would know what a game expansion is. In case you don’t, here is a simple explanation. The Wrath of the Lich King WoW game expansions are extensions of an original game. It is an installable program that is added on to an original game. A game expansion does a lot of things to the original game. Not only does it improve game play, it also extends that game itself. Expansions add more features to the original game, making it more interesting. One shouldn’t mistake game patches as expansions. There is a big difference between the two. A game patch merely updates the current game. These usually involve glitch fixes and other little changes. Expansions, on the other hand, are like a separate game but in the same context. You can say that is like a sequel and a patch is like a mini-game.

One game that uses and relies on expansions is World of Warcraft. World of Warcraft is one of the most popular MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) today. Its success is rooted in its use of expansion sets, which always leave players wanting more. Its most recent game expansion is the Wrath of the Lich King. The Wrath of the Lich King follows the success of the original World of Warcraft game and its first expansion set, the Burning Crusades.

As with the Burning Crusades, the Wrath of Lich King adds a lot of good stuff to the game. The most important addition is the expansion of the world map to incorporate Northrend, the home of the Lich King. Followers of the Warcraft lore and players of the old Warcraft game expansion, the Frozen Throne, should be familiar with Northrend. Here, you get to face one of the most important characters in Warcarft: Arthas, a former human paladin who is now sits in the Frozen Throne as the new Lich King. Northrend brings many challenges and surprises. Aside from the usual dungeon and instance additions, there is also a new playable class, the Death Knight. The Wrath of the Lich King is definitely a great follow up.

Game Expansions: The Key to World of Warcraft’s Success

World of Warcraft is a record holder when it comes to online gaming. In the history of MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games), World of Warcraft is the most successful. Its market is currently comprised on 11 million subscribers and is continuously growing. It generates the majority of Blizzard Entertainment’s revenues as it dominates more than half of the online gaming market. The reason why World of Warcraft is so successful is because it leaves its players always wanting more. You see, World of Warcraft is a game that is endless. Unlike other games, World of Warcraft doesn’t go stale after you reach game end; simply because of the fact that there is no game end yet.

How is it that World of Warcraft doesn’t have a game end? It’s simple. The developers of the games continuously build up on the original game, expanding it further. This is yet another profit generator for Blizzard as gamers are required to purchase expansion sets whenever there are big new developments required. So what is an expansion set? An expansion set is like new software that you will install and add onto your existing World of Warcraft system. This usually entails big changes in the system. This is how the game becomes endless. For every expansion, there is a set level cap. The level cap will be the temporary game-end level; that is, until the new expansion comes out.

So far, World of Warcraft has had two expansions, the Burning Crusades and the Wrath of the Lich King. Another expansion, Cataclysm, is due for release in late 2010. Aside from level cap increases, expansions also include new stuff for players to tinker with. Examples of these are new races, classes, areas to explore, dungeons and instances, bosses and other things. The developers at Blizzard are very good at keeping players excited about the game. And that is why World of Warcraft is so successful. Creating demand is one of the most basic rules in economics. Once you know how to do this, you expect a lot of success. Blizzard has mastered this art.

The Burning Crusade Rave

As the races of Azeroth recover from their demise, so has the ingenious makers of World of Warcraft continued to add more exciting game features. So what makes WoW’s expansion, The Burning Crusade, more exciting? Here are among its irresistible features:

1) You can make your character work by grinding and questing to reach level seventy. Will you be among the players who will stand out in terms of experience points?
